OUR KEY SPECIES

Agami Heron

The Agami Heron (Agamia agami) is one of the most secretive and elegant herons of Costa Rica. It only nests in a few remote places and the Pacuare Reserve is the most important nesting place for the heron in the country, reaching about 70 individuals on a nesting season.

It´s present in Central America and north of South America and always connected to wetlands or thin streams. It feeds on fishes and insects.

They nest in Pacuare between March and September with great variability in the arriving and departure dates. Although we have some information of the number of nesting couples, nesting time and habits, very little is known about its general ecology, phenology or migratory patterns.
