Activities for Visitors
​
 Introduction to the Marine Turtle Monitoring Program and the Research Protocol
  • This activity serves as your preparation to actively participate in the marine turtle census.  A staff member will give you information about the marine turtle monitoring project and its components:  such as the data that is collected at the beach, the nesting months, the spikes in the nesting season, and safety aspects among others.  .
  • Included in your rate and available March-September.

 Nightly Marine Turtle Census

During the nightly census you will experience research live and first hand, which is sure to be an unforgettable experience.  Under the guidance of a research assistant your team will search the beach for nesting turtles, and you will help to collect biometric data of the turtles, document the quantity of the eggs laid, tags, nest location and re-location of nests laid in high risk areas.  Walk the beach without any artificial light

Daily Marine Turtle Census 
Nest Liberation & Exhumations
  • The day census  is a monitoring route to document turtle nesting activities of the night before,.  Watch the sun rise over the Caribbean Sea and witness the hatching of baby turtles from their nests.  

  • Included in your rate and available March - September.

  • From May to September you can witness nest liberations and help protect the baby turtles on their way to the Sea.    Watch as the Research Assistants exhume nests after the baby turtles have hatched.  

Visit to the Agami Heron Sanctuary
  • The Agami Heron is considered to be the most beautiful of all the Herons.  Sightings are rare, and very few nesting sites are known of and accessible.  From May to September, a colony of Agami Herons nests at the lagoon near the South Station of Pacuare Reserve.  Visitation of the sanctuary is permitted following the research protocol.  Watch as the herons build their nests, care for their eggs and their young.  Sightings are highly likely.  Included in your rate and available from about Mid May to August/September.

Birdwatching 
  • Over 200 species of resident and migratory birds have been identified at Pacuare Reserve.

  • The main path that connects the South and North Stations  and other shorter trails are suitable for birdwatching,  as are the boat tours on the canals.

  • Available year round.  Certified naturalist guides and boat tours have an additional  charge and need to be arranged with advanced notice.

Canal Tours
  • A unique experience from the moment you get on board our small boat at the dock:  you will be surrounded by an evergreen landscape and a vast ecosystem you will feel close up.  See and learn about many species of local flora and fauna and enjoy the essence of the rainforest:  Some call it natural aromatherapy.  The canal tours are available year round , need to be arranged with advanced notice. and have an additional cost of $25 per person.

Day or Night Jungle Walk
  • Hike the trails of the rainforest to observe a large diversity of amphibians,  resident and migratory birds, primates, mammals, arthropods and plants and learn about their natural habitats.  You will be accompanied by a Reserve staff member.  ( Certified naturalist guides can be arranged for at an additional charge and advanced notice.)  Available year round.
